Author of the Month: Hisham Matar

Selected by the Bookshop

Our Author of the Month for February is the novelist, memoirist and essayist Hisham Matar.

Matar was born in New York, the son of a Libyan political dissident whose persecution by the Gaddafi regime led to the family’s permanent exile from Libya; themes of exile, loss and dispossession recur throughout his work. In 1990, his father was kidnapped by the Egyptian secret police in Cairo; Matar’s search for his father forms the backbone of his memoir The Return, and the abduction is a central motif in his second novel, Anatomy of a Disappearance. Matar has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize, the Costa Prize and the Baillie Gifford Prize; his most recent novel, My Friends, won last year’s Orwell Prize for Political Fiction.
