Eva Gonzalès entered the studio of Edouard Manet in 1869, at the age of 21, and was his only formal pupil. He began painting her that year and exhibited the ambitious full-length portrait at the Paris Salon of 1870, at which Gonzalès presented her own work for the first time. Although Manet’s painting was cruelly mocked in the press, their relationship endured, growing into a lifelong artistic dialogue.
The first in a new series of Discover titles, in which a single work of art in the National Gallery’s collection is reconsidered from a fresh perspective, this book reveals the extraordinary story behind Manet’s portrait. Exploring women’s artistic practice and representation in nineteenth-century Paris, Discover Manet & Eva Gonzalès provides a richly illustrated, in-depth study of Manet’s portrait and a groundbreaking viewpoint on both artists.
