The ten poems in this beautiful little volume are winners in the 2023 Welshpool Open Poetry Competition, judged by Di Slaney and organised by Festival Curator Pat Edwards.

If proof were needed of the robust and lively health of contemporary poetry, these striking poems would be more than enough. We’re taken on vivid and contrasting journeys which explore our experiences as human beings, alongside themes of nature, love and loss. And, of course, there’s a good dose of irreverent humour too.

The poem that won first prize is a moving and uplifting hymn which finds acceptance and hope even in the most unexpected places:

“…Bless the new-born river when it trickles into the light.
You are that river.”

from ‘Blessings’ by Estelle Price

We hope you’ll enjoy this celebration of wonderful poems and that you’ll find in its pages moments of reflection, beauty and joy.

Poems by Carole Bromley, Kate Innes, Kathy Miles, Stuart Pickford, Estelle Price, Penny Sharman, Barry Tench, Laura Theis and John Woodall.
